Department of Oriental Studies

A centre for the study of the Middle East and North Africa, the department of Oriental Studies at the University of Vienna is the only institution of its kind in Austria and one of the largest in Central Europe. The department currently is home to five full professorships and employs a further 17 scientific staff, with about 700 students enrolled. Teaching and research, including externally funded projects, are focussed on Studies of the Ancient Orient (Assyrian Studies) and Middle Eastern Archaeology, Arab Studies, Islamic Studies, and Turkish Studies with a focus on the Ottoman era.
