Department of Romance Studies
One focus of linguistic research at the Department traditionally lies on sociolinguistics, language politics and the social history of languages as well as in text, discourse and media studies as understood as a subfield of cultural semiotics. A second focus is research in grammar theory, based on the study of the grammar of the Romance languages in synchrony and diachrony as well as in a comparative and crosslinguistic perspective. Both research areas converge in their interests as far as they are also concerned with regional/minority languages, language contact and multilingualism in the Romance area.
